The Artist

In art I give myself permission to enjoy the whole process of creating - conceiving an idea, immersing in background reading and research, experimenting with techniques, and finally developing a collection of paintings, prints, or drawings (which sometimes seem to take on a life of their own) - deliberately seeking freedom from too many constraining rules and conventions…At the end of this process the finished picture hopefully gives some pleasure to some one else as well…

Past opportunities to live, study, and work overseas, particularly in China, have given me personal and professional experiences that I value greatly, and have enhanced my awareness of my own and other cultures; a special interest in Chinese culture is a strong influence in much of my artwork. Current favourite media include Chinese ink and watercolours, graphite, coloured pencil, acrylics, and lino block prints; those early childhood habits of saving and recycling, while growing up on a farm, have not gone away, as I also like to explore the use of discarded materials in creative processes.

I love living in rural Queensland, and in previous work roles have traveled extensively in rural and remote areas; I am passionate about country people having access to the same opportunities as people who live in larger centres, and for this reason have recently begun teaching Chinese brush painting workshops.

Even though the prospect of "exposure" is always quite daunting, I nevertheless seek opportunities to share my art through exhibitions, as a way of contributing to the community, and because of my belief in the interconnectedness of all cultures, and a desire to share this; I also hope to stimulate others to explore their own creativity, and not get too caught up in all the "busy-ness" of life.
